Executive Summary

The application was the culmination of over four years of work by the dedicated Board members who at times reached into their own pockets to finance their effort.  Several possible locations along the East Coast were evaluated before they selected Port Covington, Baltimore, Maryland as their preferred location.

The USS Forrestal Museum, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation, has been formed by a group of businessmen (and former officers and crewmembers).  Its primary goal is to save the ship to capitalize on the attraction of the
FORRESTAL as a world class naval museum.

FORRESTAL presents a unique opportunity as a preeminent museum attraction because:

  • FORRESTAL is the World's First Super Aircraft Carrier, with a rich historical base.  She will possibly be the only Super Aircraft Carrier museum in the world.  All of the operational super carriers are modeled after her.
  • The impressive scope of the museum's features exhibits and interactive displays.
  • Proximity to Interstate 95, the downtown inner harbor area and Fort McHenry.  The chosen site meets the requirements for docking the ship and has ample room for parking and other capital improvements in Baltimore.
  • With a tourist base of over 13 million people, it is anticipated that the Forrestal Museum will generate a net positive cash flow in the first year of operation.
  • FORRESTAL will provide a unique theme for special events, military reunions, corporate meetings, conventions, and other affairs.
  • A wide spectrum of disciplines in education can be centered on various school curriculums involving youth, civic and veteran programs throughout Maryland, and the surrounding area.
  • FORRESTAL's location is the best suited for high visibility and heavy visitor traffic.
  • Overnight Youth Programs will be tendered to the various scout and youth groups throughout the United States.

According to the Baltimore Area Convention and Visitor Association, there are over 13 million overnight visitors to the Baltimore area annually.  With an average capture rate established by other carrier museums of 6%, clearly the museum will experience a positive cash flow during the first year.
